Yesterday Hanyi foundry in Beijing released the short film 聚 Getting Together – The Story of Bojing which I made with Yimeng Wu, which tells the story of how she created the Chinese font Bojing, an amalgamation of Berlin and Beijing. Yimeng Wu, who grew up in China and Germany, now works at her design studio in Berlin. It was a pleasure working with Yimeng to combine the design elements with the action of writing the font with ink and a brush to create a visual impression of her process. Wooden boats still load freight to bring to the archipelago nation. The swept prows and broad beams of a century and a half ago toil on into this one, diesel has replaced sail but I saw no navigational systems on the boat I was allowed to board – just a cb radio and a cell phone with gps. A Pakistani businessman inquired where I was from and what brought me down to the harbour. I told him the boats. He told me he was shipping barrels of palm oil to be made into laundry soap. Preparing for the Good Life half marathon here in Victoria BC. Racing against myself for a solid finish. On my mind, among other things, is the struggle to protect the Headwaters of the Skeena, Nass and Stikine rivers. Referred to as the ‘Sacred Headwaters’ because of it’s cultural importance to the Tahltan Nation, any environmental impact there would likely affect vast areas down stream in all three watersheds. 5 weeks in Indonesia included 4 weeks of travel and adventure and one week of interviews and conversation to explore the feasibility of continuing my documentary project on the people who work in animal rescue and conservation.
